22nd September 2010. Nepali Congress (NC) Acting President Sushil Koirala has been elected to the post of party president. In the election for the party president held Tuesday, Koirala secured 1,652 votes while his nearest rival Sher Bahadur Deuba received 1,317 votes. The other presidential candidate, Bhim Bahadur Tamang, could garner only 78 votes.
 
As per the NC statute, a presidential candidate had to secure over 50 percent of the total votes cast to get elected to the post. With the election of Koirala as new president for the next four years, the country´s grand old party has officially transferred its leadership to a second generation of leaders. Koirala is known for his simple lifestyle and for not taking up any key government position.
 
Joining the party´s Central Working Committee in 1978, Koirala has already held the post of general-secretary and acting president. He lived with B P Koirala and Girija Prasad Koirala since childhood as BP Koirala´s father and Sushil´s father also lived together during their exile in India.
 
The 12th General Convention has also elected Prakash Man Singh from Koirala´s panel and Chitra Lekha Yadav from Sher Bahadur Deuba´s panel have been elected general-secretary and treasurer respectively.
